Reading Reflection No. 3

Andrew Carnagie by David Nasaw

1) You read about an entrepreneur:
·         What surprised you the most? That the founder of the large steel company came from such a poor family
·         What about the entrepreneur did you most admire?  He came to America to allow himself to try and achieve the American dream and accomplished it!
·         What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?  He started to co-mingle his personal beliefs with politics.
·         Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? Andrew Carnagie definitely had both adversity and failure during his life.  Each time he was faced with a challenge he pushed forward to try and find the solution.
2) What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited? Strength, Persuasion, Tenacity
3) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.  I couldn’t believe that Andrew Carnagie gave so much of his money away for the cause of international peace and felt like the book didn’t really give too much insight as too why.
4) If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?  1.  Why were you so passionate about world peace?  2.  Did you ever think you would go from working in a factory to being one of the richest men on earth?
5) For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion?  I feel like Andrew Carnagie had a strong opinion when it comes to hard work.  He believed if you had a goal/dream that you should continue to work hard to achieve.  I personally share his opinion that hard work pays off.

  1. Hi Shannon,
I didn’t know that he came from a poor family - or that he came to the U.S by himself. Although I tend to think of successful people as always having been successful, in those moments he did not know of his future and wasn’t aware of the level that he’d reach. It shows that, despite not knowing he’d eventually overcome all his failures, he would eventually make it.
